Castles in the Midlands: Derbyshire and the neighbouring area

This is a discussion of the relatively few castles in the Midlands, and the causes of their distribution. It emphasises the development of important structures late in the Middle Ages.

Professor Dixon was for 30 years lecturing in the Department of Archaeology, University of Nottingham including as Head of Department. After retirement in 2002 he was professor at Aarhus and Durham, and acted as Archaeology Consultant at seven cathedrals, remaining in charge at Southwell, Leicester and Selby.
